Copernicus for Forestry and Agriculture in Portugal



The Direção-Geral do Território (DGT) and the Portuguese Space Agency (Portugal Space) have organized an event dedicated to the Forestry and Agriculture sectors. The event is part of the implementation of action “Copernicus Events for Business Innovation in Portugal”, Action No.: 2020-3-2.


The event was entitled “Copernicus for Forestry and Agriculture in Portugal” and its main goal was to respond to the challenges and needs of public and private entities with activities in the forestry and agriculture sectors. The event was divided into three parts over two days, on the 18th and 19th of December 2023, as follows:

  • Part 1: Overview of the Copernicus program, opportunities and needs of the national forestry and agricultural sectors
  • Part 2: Copernicus applications in the forestry sector
  • Part 3: Copernicus applications in the agriculture sector

Part 1 was held by videoconference on the 18th December. Part 2 and Part 3 were held in the Direção-Geral do Território auditorium in Lisbon on the 19th December. Both public and private national institutions from the Forest and Agriculture sectors were represented, as well as Earth Observation service providers.

In Part 1 the Copernicus program was introduced, opportunities were publicized and the needs of the two sectors in the country were discussed. The event was attended by two international experts, Frank Martin Seifert from ESA and Michal Babacek for EUSPA. The first day also featured presentations from Portugal Space, DGT, Colab ForestWise, Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF), National Innovation Agency (ANI), Office of Planning Policy and General Administration (GPP) and GeoSAT company.

Part 2 and Part 3 were focused on the satellite images and Copernicus services applications in the Forest and Agriculture sectors. Presentations were given by various stakeholders from both Agriculture and Forestry sectors, including companies and public entities. During lunch, a matchmaking session was held to promote networking between the various participating stakeholders in order to foster future collaboration opportunities and partnerships.

The “Copernicus for Forestry and Agriculture in Portugal” event registered a total number of 217 participants in Part 1 (online) and 124 participants in Part 2 and Part 3 (in person). An anonymous satisfaction questionnaire showed an average score of 4.3 in 5.
