A next step towards seamless climate predictions

The DWD Climate Prediction Website presents subseasonal to decadal climate predictions for temperature, precipitation and soon more.

The FPCUP project Seamless Web aimed to set up a user-friendly seamless web information portal for national downstream products focusing on German users.

This internet portal is available on the DWD Website. It offers different types of climatic predictions (provided amongst others by Copernicus Climate Change Service C3S) on different time scales in a uniform and seamless form. A central goal of the seamless web portal is to summarize the results of different forecast systems in a seamless manner. The aim is to enable especially national users to receive the climate information needed directly from the web portal and provide a national implementation of Copernicus Climate Change Services. In regular consultation with different user groups in Germany new products have been implemented like the subseasonal and the seasonal predictions of temperature and precipitation for Germany, Europe and the world. The data is provided as maps, time series and tables. Background information is given to ensure transparency.

User communication has been deepened not only via the yearly user workshop, which has grown from ~30 to over 100 participants during the years of the FPCUP action, but also thanks to new features, like FAQ, regularly updated news and tutorial films.

The end of the FPCUP action is not the end of Seamless Web! The implementation of new products is already planned, like drought predictions or the launch of an interactive version of the climate prediction website.

The main Achievements are:

  • Climate predictions on 3 timescales: subseasonal, seasonal, decadal
  • Products and information for basic and expert users
  • ~ 3400 product plots
  • More than 54300 clicks in 2022 on product pages
  • 2 (+1 planned in 2023) user workshops with 120 participants from more than 60 institutions
  • 2 feedback surveys
