Copernicus for DRR in Africa: Training Handbook online

Comprehensive tutorials on the use of Copernicus for Disaster Risk Reduction and Disaster Management are freely available.

In the context of DLR’s Sentinels-4-African-DRR action, a comprehensive Training Module Handbook with tutorials for self-education has been published by the Center for Remote Sensing of Land Surfaces (ZFL) of the University of Bonn. It includes text resources as well as videos demonstrating the utilisation of and potential benefits from tools provided by Copernicus.

The material has been produced on the basis of consultations and feedback cycles within a network of potential users with a focus on disaster management and disaster risk reduction, mainly from African countries. Several workshops and webinars have shown that there is great interest in Copernicus. Tools like GloFAS, GDO, and GWIS could clearly be used more to improve disaster management and reduce disaster-related risks in Africa. The material presented here explains in an easily understandable way how to do this.

The main achievements are:

  • General module provides an overview on using Remote Sensing, Earth Observation and GIS in the context of natural disasters
  • Flood module introduces the use of the Copernicus Global Flood Awareness System (GloFAS)
  • Drought module focuses on the use of the Copernicus Global Drought Observatory (GDO)
  • Fire module introduces the Copernicus Global Wildfire Information Service (GWIS)
  • 5-minute video provides further insights into the FPCUP action
