The Action "BENELUX Copernicus Day" aims to organize three cross-border Copernicus Days, under a perennial label AI4Copernicus, for the years 2022 to 2024. The events aim to strengthen the Copernicus program user uptake and the cooperation between stakeholders from the BENELUX and beyond. Under this AI4Copernicus banner, each event strives to bridge the gap between the worlds of Copernicus/Earth observation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) with each event focusing on dedicated topics.

The 2022 event was jointly organized between the Walloon Copernicus Relays (ISSeP) and the Flemish relay (VITO) and was held at the Royal Military Academy (RMA) in Brussels on May 3rd 2022. The event had a clear focus on the Security and Defense theme, leading to the name of the event: “Earth Observation and Artificial Intelligence for a safer world”. Two key results were:

  • 36 talks introducing state-of-the-art researches, latest technological solutions and future challenges ;
  • Participants from 50+ companies, 50+ start-ups, 40+ public bodies, 5+ Copernicus Academy, from 25 nationalities, strongly contributed to cross-border networking and promotion of Copernicus-related projects, research and applications.

The next event, entitled “Earth observation & Artificial Intelligence Solutions for Climate Change Challenges”, will take place on May 25, 2023 in Luxembourg. This new edition will focus on climate change and its impact on energy, food and water security. To withstand current and future pressures on our natural resources, integrated and sustainable management practices are required to balance the needs of people, nature and the economy. The event includes a conference day with 15+ talks, posters and networking sessions, preceded by two days of summer school.

In 2024, AI4Copernicus will move to The Netherlands. As for each edition, the objective is to set up an ambitious event that is in line with the ultra-fast evolution of the field.  AI4Copernicus continues to generate interest and a growing ecosystem is being created around the initiative. This new edition will need to maintain this momentum and identify perspectives for the future.

Outputs and Results:

  • Minutes of the meeting.
